Meeting for Worship, 10:00am Sundays
16 South Campus Avenue, Oxford, Ohio 45056
"In the quiet of silent worship, the soul drinks directly from the Divine Fountain that nourishes it."
At Oxford Friends Meeting we follow the Quaker tradition of silent worship. A silent meeting is a gathering where participants sit together in quiet, expectant waiting, allowing the Divine Spirit to move through stillness and inspire anyone who feels led to share.
In our collective silence the buzz of phones and the rush of daily schedules fade, leaving a comforting hush that reminds us we are all connected in that still moment. There is no appointed minister; everyone shares responsibility for worship and may speak when moved by the Spirit of God. When the hour ends, we carry that calm forward, feeling steadier, more present, and ready to meet the day's demands as a united, centered community. In a world that never stops buzzing, our weekly hour offers a pause for you, your partner, and your children.
"Walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in every one."
As Friends, we believe that there is "that of God in every person". This core belief shapes all of Friends' faith and practice. Because we believe that every person has access to the Light Within, we seek to follow the Spirit as it is revealed in our own experience, rather than dogma, and our worship grows out of silent waiting for the awareness of truth.
"Our principle is, and our practices have always been, to seek peace, and ensue it, and to follow after righteousness and the knowledge of God, seeking the good and welfare, and doing that which tends to the peace of all."
Because we believe in the Divine Spark in all persons, we are called to seek nonviolence and social justice. This is exemplified in Friends' conscientious objection to war, and our historical role in the US antislavery movement. Oxford Friends Meeting has demonstrated our commitment through social action against poverty and discrimination. In our meeting's history, we have stood against too many wars. We have worked to help the marginalized and vulnerable by helping other meetings to provide sanctuary to immigrants. Our meeting has long affirmed all members, attenders, and their partners, celebrating the full diversity of sexual and gender identities.
It is our sincerest desire to welcome you and your family into ours so that we may continue our mission of nurturing the light in all people.
"If we consider the spiritual message of the Society of Friends apart from its social message we must realize that 'spiritual' and 'social' are as intimately related as the two sides of a door; you can't have one without the other."
